The 2018 central Canterbury trial was planted on a farm 10 km west of Rolleston on a shallow Lismore series 9 soil, on 6 October 2017 by Bassett Agriculture Ltd.  Seed for all treatments was drilled at 80,000 seeds per hectare and 50 cm row spacing, with a mean established plant number of 57,000 per hectare.

The crop was irrigated with a linear travelling irrigator.

The trial was measured on 4 May 2018.  There were significant differences between some cultivars (Fig. 1).  The mean yield was 27.2 t DM/ha, with a leaf to bulb ratio of 14:86.  Dry matter of bulbs was slightly higher than long-term means (1.9% points higher).
